Karen obtained her law degree, magna cum laude, from Seattle University in 2003. She is admitted to practice law in all State and Federal courts in Washington and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. She has four times been named a “Rising Star” by Washington Law & Politics Magazine (2010-2013). In 2009, she became a Certified Force Science Analyst through the Force Science Research Institute, via an intensive course designed to train police officers, their command staff, attorneys and others to recognize and articulate important psychological, biological, and physiological factors that can influence human behavior and memory in use of force encounters and pursuit situations. She developed and presented a training module for law enforcement officers involved in lethal encounters and serves the legal community as a speaker in continuing legal education classes on probate topics.

Karen is involved in various charitable activities and is passionate about giving her time, talents and resources to helping girls and young women escape from the rampant sex trade. She currently serves on the women's ministry team at her church and has served three terms on its advisory council, along with participating in four mission trips to Knockpatrick, Jamaica (after Hurricane Ivan), Biloxi, Mississippi (after Hurricane Katrina) and San Luis Potosi, Mexico (inner city missions) with the youth group. Karen is an avid traveler and loves to document her adventures through photography and scrapbooking. She loves to stay active with trips to the gym, kickboxing, volleyball and the occasional snowshoe adventure.
