Steve has over 35 years of experience trying cases primarily focused on the defense of civil litigation, including claims of personal injury, sports-related cases, product liability, and civil rights. He has represented clients dozens of times before the appellate courts of Washington, the Ninth Circuit and the United States Supreme Court. Steve’s recent efforts have focused on representing various government agencies and police officers, including the City of Seattle Police Department and the cities of Edmonds, Auburn Bellevue, Federal Way, Port Townsend, and their officers, as well as Island County, Whatcom County, Snohomish County, and their deputies. Among his many cases, Steve obtained one of the first jury awards on a counterclaim for malicious prosecution brought on behalf of a police officer.

Steve has also been active in the legal community as a member of the Federal Bar Association, Washington Defense Trial Lawyers, and the Defense Research Institute. He has been a speaker at various law enforcement seminars, and has trained extensively for police agencies and organizations in Washington on issues related to policy civil liability, risk management and legal issues on police operations.

Prior to law school Steve served as a captain in the United States Marine Corps, and earned a Silver Star and Purple Heart among other awards in Vietnam. He clerked for the Hon. Robert Y. Thornton of the Oregon Court o f Appeals after law school.

Steve is a former Board Member and President of the Bainbridge Public Library, and a former Board Member of the Bainbridge Community Foundation. He has recently retired as a youth soccer coach after 16 years with club, select and premier teams.
